Torah Pearls – Ki Teitzei – Deuteronomy 21:10-25:19 – Nehemia Gordon & Keith Johnson

How is the rebellious son cursed by hanging on a tree? Did Keith break Torah by shooting the neighbour’s trash can conquering dog? What is the relationship between the verses regarding ploughing, sowing, and weaving material? Is there a secret Methodist formula to making tzitzit? What does it mean to come into the presence of YHVH? What exactly is a “mamzer” and “the price of a dog”? In Malichi 2:16 who “hates divorce”?

Wow tthanks for the clarity on Divorce. I always wondered about this because of the prophetic place of Ephraim. It makes no sense that Yah would devorse Ephraim and exile them amongst all the nations to be absorbed, somewhat, if He hated divorce. I am very thankful that He loves restoration and that Ephraim will be brought back from the corners of the earth! Thanks gentlemen this teaching clarifies beautifully!

PS Keith tisk tisk… too funny. My father once got a squirl with a bee bee gun… at least the dog was bigger 😉

I want to make a comment about the command of not mixing linen and wool together. Research has shown that both Linen and wool have a very high frequency that causes healing and other healthy aspects for the body. However, if the two are mixed together they cancel each other out and the healing and health components of the two fabrics are destroyed. So that may very well be why we are commanded not to mix them together, just a thought. Cotton on the other hand has a very low frequency for health to the body.

Nehemia stated on his Facebook to comment if we don’t want torah pearls to stop. Please Please don’t stop. I listen to all of you every shabbot. It’s like the torah comes alive and the learning is fabulous week after week. I have learned more about what Yah wants us to do. I save the lessons every week on my computer and relisten to it with a better understanding of the torah. I tell everyone about your radio show. Sometimes my son and I will sit on Shabbot and listen together and have discussions about what we have learned that day. So please continue do not stop………

Thank you guys for all you do! You three are truly a blessing. In particular I want to thank you for the clarification on the issue of divorce. I have recently been watching a friend struggle with guilt over whether or not to leave an abusive marriage because she has always been taught divorce is only acceptable if adultery occurred. I intend to pass this program on to her in hopes that it might bring her some peace. Thank you again. And yes please do the Haftorah!

  12. FrankfromBerlin says

How can you guys think about stopping the pearls or the getting together of the three of you. Don´t you dare or i might have to travel round the world with a bee bee gun ^^. By the way:

we love y’all and appreciate you so much!~

  16. Deb says

you said you had no idea why the command is given concerning the mixing of the wool and the flax or cotton. scientific studies have shown that mixing an animal (particularly wool) and a plant fiber cause harm….that the mixing is literally unhealthy. Frequencies in pure flax are quite high. Also, even mixing plant or animal fibers in the dryer cause static electricity. …modern science finally catches up with our ancient torah 🙂

and thank you also for touching on the subject of divorce, yes a more detailed and indepth study on that would be good.

  17. Sandi Hayman says

Thanks for the Torah Pearls! Please don’t stop! I love listening and learn so much. Also thanks for the dialog on divorce. I am divorced because of infidelity (husband) and have wondered if I have the “right” to re-marry. My brother says I’ll be in sin and will suffer calamity if I do. Yet others interpret it as I may. I have given it to Yah and so far, 10 years later, I’m still single. As much as I enjoyed being married I would rather wait for a like-minded partner if it is in His plans for me. I’m enjoying all your Midrashing, don’t stop!!!

This was an extremely interesting program, thank you guys for clarifying so many of these commands that have been misunderstood in various religions. The discussion on the 10th generation and mamzer was eye-opening. Thank you for explaining Malachi 2:16 according to hebrew which is so different than english translations. I look forward to Torah Pearls every week and appreciate all you do.

RE: linen and wool together – the following information can be found a the website listed at the end

Nobel prize winning Dr. Otto Heinrich Warburg identified signature frequency numbers of the average human at 70-90.  All results with numbers less than 50 were identified as the signature frequency of chronic disease.  Any number less than a 15 frequency was identified with those having been diagnosed with a life-threatening illness, such as cancer.  The signature frequency measurement of linen fabric measures 5,000!

How do other fabrics compare?  Plant fibers like cotton and hemp are not healing materials when measuring their signature energy output.  Standard bleached and colored cotton measures only 40 units of energy.  Organic, unbleached cotton measures 100 units of energy, which is considered normal, but not a healing fiber.  Silk fabric only measures 10 units of energy, which would fail to support health in the human body.  Rayon measures at a 15 signature frequency.  Polyester, acrylic, spandex, lycra, viscose and nylon measure zero.  Pure wool measures 5,000 units of energy – same as linen, but I find wool irritating to my sensitive skin – like a Brillo Pad on me, unfortunately.

For any individual desiring to regain and maintain health, the best recommendation – dating all the way back to The Bible itself – is to wear linen.  The Biblical warning of wearing wool and linen together was also proven in scientific studies to be accurate: the energy of these two fabrics worn together (e.g., a wool sweater on top of a linen outfit) collapsed the electrical field.  While the two textiles both measure 5,000 signature frequencies individually, when put together, they cancelled each other out, and – in some cases – brought measurable weakness and even pain to the human body.

    Thanks – Sherri

I vote for the Prophets over Haftarah (or is this the same thing?) lol and definitely episodes on divorce!
    LOL FrankfromBerlin
Amein Jeannette Hall, I was going to say the same thing.
You guys are too funny! I glean so much from these Torah pearls.
Thank-you so much for your invested time as it, as you know, is an investment in our lives and we appreciate it ssoooooo much!!

  23. Debby says

Please don’t stop Torah Pearls. My husband is disabled due to Parkinsons and so we can’t meet with the local assemby anymore though they are faithful to check in on us. We listen to several teachings over Shabbat but always begin with you guys. It is such a blessing and an example of how we need to be able to have a difference of opinion yet stay connected. Thanks and Yah bless you one and all!

  24. Janet says

Please continue by doing the Haftorah. Love hearing the pearls!

Please do continue! Love the interaction between the three of you and we’re learning so much from your study and perspectives! And thank you guys so much for putting all the time and effort into these – they are priceless.

  33. Michelle Deans says

I so love these teachings… please continue, but give up watching the clock… the latter discussions are far more indepth than the earlier ones!
re Deut 22:5 I have very sensitive skin, and have always been a modest dresser, liking looser fitting rather than skin tight… I have worn men’s shirts (mainly polo’s and flannelette) for many years… I dont like the women’s ranges, the fabrics cause reactions, the immodesty of necklines and the over-fittedness of garments are not what I would call torah styled. But I try to find the colours that are “feminine flattering”… and have had positive comments on some of my garments (they look better on me than on my boys…lol) Is this a violation? Im not trying to look like a man, just dress comfortably and appropriately.
    blessings to you all 🙂

  34. Mark says

continue on; u r just getting a groove on!

  35. Michael Spieker says

Deut 22:5 comment: I was reading about syncrnistic practices some time ago and I was surprised to learn that there was a form of devotion to an androgynous deity where the women would put on the men’s armor and the men would wear the womens clothes and they would parade around in devotion to their He/She god. This made me think of Deut 22:5 as a possible interpretation for that verse.

  36. la londa says

    Please, continue with the haftorah.

  37. Ingrid says

Yes please continue on with the prophets, these broadcasts have been so wonderful. I have been listening since the very first episode. They are so enlightening and really makes me think and rethink things that i thought were truths. I love getting all the different perspectives.

  38. James Hayman says

    More More More please

  39. Olivia says

Hey guys, I’d like to vote for you moving into the haftorah as the torah pearls come to a close. My mother listens to you weekly on Saturday alongside her torah studies and I’m a bouncy one listening to you guys via my iPod whenever and wherever. I enjoy hearing your perspectives and have learned alot from your teachings/discussions.
I also want to say that you guys should speak very candidly. This statement is very much in regard to the sections of the torah portions on women. I have learned much on feminism and how women had no choices excreta. Hearing the truth behind the wide spread lies is spoken from you guys is eye opening in areas I had no ideas about and also confirming what I already suspected, so please continue to keep things awesomely funky, it is much appreciated ^_^

  40. Richard says

Love the perspective, please keep going.

  41. Ilana says

    Jono, Keith & Nehemia,
Your humor, wisdom, and shared inspiration are greatly valued!!! I look forward to your Thursday mailings and can usually sit down to listen AND catch up on bookkeeping (simple data entry)…without your great program, it would not be such a joyful task.
    THANK YOU so much,
Safe travel to Israel to find that new moon!!!

Yes! In the name of all that is holy, righteous, and good you three must continue on in one form or another.

    Please continue.

I would really like info on how to tie the tzit-tzit in the picture for this portion…they do not look like others I have seen

  44. Lars H. Alhaug says

I actually think you are talking too much around Keith, and there is too much joking. You are teaching from Yehova’s word, and althoug we are to be glad because of being children of God, we also must remember that God is holy and he wants us to know his word so we may live by it. Be glad but not silly 😉 God bless you for explaining unknown things to us from the Torah!

  45. Tzofiya says

5 YES votes at my house-for the Haftorah! =-)

  46. Yosef says

Mixing wool (animal) & linen (plant) – are we looking too deep? My understanding is that today’s fibers are spun together at the thread level, as opposed to being mixed at the warp & weft level, of the times of Moses & the second Temple. At the weaving level, as Nehemia mentioned, wouldn’t the wool shrink differently than the linen, causing the garment to deform (like new fabric sewn upon old) or a donkey & ox plowing a circle or harvesting a crop of wheat in a vineyard?

Cross-pollination of apple varities or grape varities is not mixing different seed together & is done to enhance the fruit. Modern spun fabrics enhance the fit & tend to shrink evenly, because the warf & weft threads are the Same Kind (note: I’m no tailor).

  47. Yosef says

Jono, it seems to me that DEU 25:11 can be related to DEU 23:1. In a struggle, we are not talking of a gentle grasp & verbal threat; she loses her hand if he loses his ability…

Also, if someone pops into a Torah Pearl for a specific issue & is not familiar with your bantering, it can come across as light & silly. I believe that there is a good balance, as your banter is toward each other & not detracting from the Holy Writ. It allows us listeners to grasp your personalities. Much Thanks!!

  48. Pieter says

Deut.25:5-10…Nehemia I think you do not understand women 🙂

  49. Pieter says

  50. ShoutedTheDustSpeck says

    So why not mix…

It is possible that insulating the airing/breathing process of fresh linen (covered with its natural oils) by coupling it with waterproofing, barrier creating lanolin might be a bad plan as heat is created and then maintained. This danger would probably dissipate over time. There might be a major problem when weaving or storing it. Basically, linseed/fresh linen and its oxygen state and temperature should be considered and monitored carefully.

The opposite would also be an issue. If lanolin/wool grease is a moisture barrier and linen/linseed oil harden things are moist. This bit counter productive. You are damaging both fibers.
As the least possible consequence, you are wasting both time and resources to replace damaged fibers.

The wool needs its oils to maintain its waterproofiness and I am assuming this makes it stronger and more resilient. The oils in the linen would dry them out weakening the garment.

Linen oil needs a steady flow of air to remain in a cool and stable, the oils in wool could prevent this. Over time the linen would break down (probably would not completely ignite, but it could negatively impact this natural reaction). The lanolin could also prevent the linseed oil from drying out and becoming completely stable in the first place. It is the dryness of linen that makes it mold resistant, lanolin would keep it from being completely dry.

We don’t think of clothes as chemicals and molecules, but they are. There may be other reasons not to mix as well due to their chemical makeup as this was just quick research.
