I have had a question for Tovia on my mind for a few months now regarding beards. I notice in all the pictures I see of him online he appears clean-shaven. Is it not the stance of Judaism that keeping a beard is a requirement? I went back to the Kedoshim parashah (realizing I had missed that week and wanting to get his opinion on Lev 19:27), but unfortunately Tovia was not on the program that week to offer his stance.
I have a religious accommodation at my workplace to grow a beard where I would otherwise be required to be clean-shaven (Canadian military) because of my understanding of this text. Have I been mistaken this whole time? I would love some clarification if it can be provided. My apologies for asking a couple months too late 🙂
The prohibition against shaving with a razor is taken from Vayikra / Leviticus 19:27. The standard code of Jewish law, the [16th-century work by R’ Yosef Karo,] Shulhan Arukh (Yoreh De’ah, 181:10) determined that it is permitted to remove all facial hair with scissors even when this is done as closely as if with a razor. Electric razors basically work on the principles of scizzors and so many observant men will use an electric razor, but would not use a “straight” razor.
