In 1883, Monsieur Clermont-Ganneau, put forth a theory that the forger cut the bottom off of a Torah scroll to make his “fake” manuscript. The sin of believing in a false document, is not much greater than disbelieving the truth. The tendency of showing great scholarship by detecting a forgery is rather great in our age.
